Skincare Tips I Wish I Knew in My 20s

I’ve tried a lot of different beauty trends over the years that have and haven’t worked for me. Read on to learn about the skincare tips I wish I knew in my 20s.

IN THIS ARTICLE:

As a woman who has been involved in the beauty industry for many years, I’ve learned quite a bit. I’ve also tried a lot of different beauty trends that have and haven’t worked for me.

So I thought I’d share some impactful skincare tips with you that I wish I knew in my 20s.

Approach beauty holistically

Don’t put all your stocks in skincare and makeup.

I know. I know.

That sounds pretty silly coming from the owner of a skincare company. It’s actually because I have my own skincare line that I understand that skincare isn’t everything.

Let me tell you a quick story.

In my late 20s, I used to have the worst dark under eye circles ever. If you had looked at me then, you might have thought that I was a distant cousin of the panda. And so, I’d spend a small fortune every month on a fancy jar of eye cream hoping it would somehow help.

Did it? Absolutely not! The dark circles were still there.

It wasn’t until I consulted my friend, who happened to be a holistic aesthetician, that I figured out why: I wasn’t getting enough sleep. At that point in time, I used to go to sleep at 2 AM and wake up at 7 AM. I mean, duh, it seemed so obvious. But why didn’t I think of that?!

So yes, having a healthy lifestyle matters.

Not smoking, eating a balanced diet, getting your 8+ hours of sleep, exercising regularly and managing your stress all contribute to the health of your skin as much as your skincare products do.

Less is more

Have you ever been so overwhelmed at the insane amount of skincare products on the market? What’s with all the cleansers, toners, essences, mists, serums, ampoules, creams, lotions and oils?

Have you ever thought that you need a 15-step skincare routine to achieve that flawless look that all the celebrities and influencers seem to have?

Once upon a time, that used to be me. But I know better now, so I’ll let you in on a few secrets.

One: No one’s skin is perfect.

The poreless, wrinkleless images that you see in the media are all altered and airbrushed. The truth is, everyone has some sort of skin concern whether it be large pores, dark spots or wrinkles.

But you know what? Everyone's skin is beautiful and tells a unique story.

Two: A simple skincare routine is better than a complicated one.

Keep your routine simple. A good cleanser, one or two serums and a suitable moisturizer are all you need.

Aging is a privilege

I’m proudly anti-anti-aging. But, admittedly, this wasn’t always the case.

In my 20s, I went through a phase where I was mildly obsessed with anti-aging skincare products. It didn’t help that Hollywood celebrities always managed to look so effortlessly flawless. They just never seemed to age.

I thought that by investing in these products that I, too, could look 20 forever.

The thing is, the products I bought never made me feel good about myself. No matter how hard I tried, the pores and fine lines were still there. Don’t get me wrong. My skin looked healthy and the imperfections were less visible, but I certainly didn’t look as flawless as the ideal version of myself that I had in my head.

It wasn’t until many years later that I truly realized that aging is inevitable. You simply cannot stop it. It also took me some time to realize aging is a privilege that not everyone gets to experience.

So, don’t be afraid to age. Instead of seeing your wrinkles as just wrinkles, see them as proof that you’ve lived, laughed and loved. They’re proof that you’re a sentient, living being who’s out there doing their best. And you know what, you’re beautiful just the way you are!

Perhaps this is a lot to take in, but don’t feel overwhelmed. Even to this day, I’m still learning and improving myself. Just know that learning to take care of yourself and your skin are worth it!
