Best Multitasking Skincare Product To Use All Year Round

Late for work?
Too tired for a multi-step product regimen every night?
I hear you.
It happens to the best of us.
Fret not.
We have a timesaving, one product backup plan for you when
(I mean life) happens!

I can speak for my whole team here (and literally hundreds of you who have written me), our All Over Elixir goes beyond the call of duty offering you the ability cleanse, soothe, hydrate and protect almost every single part of your body. It is a multitasking skincare product that is formulated for use on your face, body, and even your hair.

No you didn't read that wrong.

In case you didn't know, we originally formulated our Elixir as a precious facial oil but me being who I am (practical, modest and a bit of a dreamer ;) I decided to offer it in a large enough bottle (at a ridiculously good price) so that you could use it with abandon... In other words, what I like to call...
Guilt Free Skincare.

That said our soft, silky (and sultry) Elixir Oil was originally going to go in a 50ml bottle as an alternative to our über potent Superfood Serum but I threw caution to the wind (against the advice of my accountant who suggested I ought to double the price) and put it in the beautiful and sleek 100ml bottle that it lives in now.

That means you have the quality of high-performance anti-aging oils, pristine enough to use on your face (even under your eyes) with the decadence of being able to use it with abandon all of your body. I mean, why not treat your body as well as you would your face?

Here are just 3 of the Game-Changing Ingredients You'll Find in Our Elixir

Camelina Seed Oil is incredibly amazing, not just because it's grown in Canada (Saskatchewan to be exact :) but because it's super rich in moisturizing EFA's (essential fatty acids) and is a great source of skin healing vitamin E. Most of all, I love it because it smells so d*mn good with a unique, almost nutty aroma.

Grapeseed Oil is super duper light and leaves your skin with a 'satin', non-oily finish.  This is an important component in the formula so you can get dressed quickly and not have to wait for the Elixir to sink in! And yes, it's also grown in Canada too!

Essential oils of lavender, chamomile + sandalwood help to revive your tired, stressed out skin and help make it look and feel supple and revitalized.

Why is our Elixir my desert island must-have?

Because there are a bazillion ways to use it. When I go away for the weekend and am only taking a small carry on, it is virtually the only skincare product I put in my toiletry kit.
  • For Cleansing: this miraculous face and body oil will take your makeup, sweat, and plain old dirt off your face lickedy-split without leaving your cheeks in an oil glut.
  • I usually use it in conjunction with our Konjac Sponge with Bamboo Charcoal but you can use a plain old washcloth - or just massage with your fingers and towel dry with a hand towel. One or two pumps should do the trick.
  • After Washing: while your face is still wet apply a small pump (or two) on your face for luxurious and moisturized skin. Rub any remaining oil onto your hands focusing on your cuticles and nail beds.
  • For Shaving: If your legs or armpits need a little attention apply on areas to be shaven and use your fresh, clean razor to help create smooth and silky skin without any nicks or irritation. And always remember to rinse your razor with warm water between strokes, and once finished. For men, the formula also works as a beard oil as well!
  • For Moisturizing: If you are not rushing, you can also use a moisturizing cream and add a few drops of the Elixir for added hydration.
  • While Showering: During the winter season, you can use a washcloth, loofah or 'scrub mitt' and vigorously massage your skin which will help dislodge dry skin cells and simultaneously cleanse your skin. Keep in mind that oil binds with oil, and the dirt on your skin is basically made from oil, sweat, and toxins so this is one of the easiest ways to cleanse your skin instead of using soap.
  • After Showering: Apply one or two pumps of The Elixir all over your body (and face) after taking a shower or bath while your skin is still wet. Brusquely towel off immediately
  • For Bedtime: Without going into abundant detail, the Elixir is a wonderful oil for play under the covers. (I'll let your imagination fill in the blanks here :)
  • For Hair: As a hair treatment, squirt one pump of our All Over Elixir Oil into hands. Apply a light coat to ends. Wrap hair in a towel for a few hours. Leave in until the next time you shower and wash your hair.
  • For split ends: frizz and fly-aways, apply the oil to the tips of your hair.
  • For Massage: In need of a massage or a spa day? Dispense one to two pumps onto the skin. Allow the soothing aroma lull you off into deep relaxation mode.
  • For Stretchmarks: Lastly, our All Over Elixir Oil is also a fantastic addition to your pre and peri-natal routine when used on your growing or shrinking belly and breasts to naturally prevent and minimize stretch marks. Made with food grade ingredients your skin will 'eat it up' and readily absorb it. It's even suitable to for your most 'personal bits' while leading up to delivery.

This multitasking skincare product is a great 'cheat' when you're tight-for-time at home and when you're traveling.

If you have any questions about the Elixir please ask away! Or leave us a comment below :)

Graydon xo

Gratitude is not just a 'woo-woo' thing!

In case you didn't know, the practice of having gratitude is not just a woo-woo thing but a scientific fact. In fact, active gratitude reduces stress and re-forms neural pathways into more positive routings.

It can actually physically deconstruct the express track to Bummerville. So, when you’re seething about how your rant-subject always does 'x' that makes you nuts, think about how that person also does 'y', which is very helpful.

I like to practice gratitude a lot. Even when I'm not having a bad day. Keep reading for just a few of the things and people I am super grateful for!

I am super grateful for my small but mighty team who make ‘Graydon’ a reality. I could not do all this without them. I am beyond lucky to have them share my vision of making plant powered skincare.

It's only with their commitment, passion and drive that I have been able to have been able to develop products that actually help create goodness in the world and which allow me to help others with their health, wellness and beauty (inside and out :).

I am especially grateful to our wonderful customers many of whom have witnessed us go through a bevy of growing pains and who have still stayed loyal and even more committed in our journey to produce high-performance green beauty (at a fair price :)

I am so grateful to Paulo (my almost 80-year-old father) who has been my voice of reason and calm in the storm. He has made so many people happy be delivering countless parcels with his quiet charm and handsome smile.

I am actually grateful for what was a very challenging divorce. Though a peaceful loving committed marriage was what I had hoped for, I would never have been pushed to my limit to create this business.

I am incredibly grateful for my son Julian who always makes me laugh and challenges me to do my best. I feel so much gratitude that we worked many a late night together at the dining room table (him doing homework, me developing products). I’m so proud that I might have rubbed off on him a little because he's currently studying Biology and Botany at university!

I am supremely grateful for a special person in my life (who shall remain nameless for the sake of privacy) who has talked me through countless challenging days, made sure I had warm healthy food to eat when I didn't have the energy left to cook for myself, given me the best hugs, played the most delightful tunes, inspired me to better a better person and above given me love through thick and thin (tears and laughter).

I am deeply grateful for my Grandmother Graydon (yes, this is how I got my name) who spent countless hours teaching me to cook and who loved spending time with me in her garden with me showing me all the flowers and native species. Granny is the one who introduced me to flavour, texture and blending things together. It is her early teachings would eventually inspire me to start making skincare formulations.

Like so many immigrants, my ancestors came across the proverbial pond in search of opportunity in the 1800's and at the turn of the century, and I am very grateful they made that choice to take a risk and create a new life for themselves in Canada so that my parents and grandparents to could grow up in safe, prosperous country.

I am beyond grateful to be alive and well. At one point not too many years ago, I felt like my anxiety could have literally swallowed me whole and if it wasn't for friends, family and some wonderful health care practitioners, I could have really gone off the deep end.

I am overflowing with gratitude that the beautiful country of Canada is brimming with natural resources and organic farms that grow amazing things (broccoli, blueberries, cranberries, raspberries, camelina, apples, kale and hemp just to name a few) which we are privileged to use to make our wholesome, nutrient dense products that really work.

Lastly, I am still so grateful our little dog Cayenne who unexpectedly died last year. I still feel like her warm, gentle spirit is still part of our lives and I cherish the times we had together, the warmth of her little body snuggling with me on the duvet, her fierce loyalty, her adorable howling whenever the piano was played, her unconditional love and companionship when I was alone for so many years and of course the memories.

What are you grateful for?

I Love You Dad!

Those words are very personal for me. Without my Dad (who we affectionately call Paulo) I wouldn't have this little business. My 79-year-old father is very active at Graydon HQ often getting up at 4:30am to deliver packages, going back and forth to the lab, keeping track of our books and always managing to keep a smile on our face.

Paulo truly embodies the phrase 'young at heart', and I count my blessings each and every day that my team and I are so lucky to have a great man as a mentor, father and business partner. He has taught me about business and I've taught him about skincare. We're a good little team :)

Whether or not you have a father in your life, I suspect that many of you have some good men in your life and even if those guys are not your dad they deserve to be honoured.

Beauty Foods For Skin : This is For Anyone Who's Ever Struggled With Acne

foods to help acne

Feeding your skin with healthy beauty foods will give you a healthy glow that no amount of cosmetics can replicate. Here are some of our favourite beauty foods for skin guaranteed to get your glow on – from the inside out.

Science is proving there is a strong connection between your skin and gut health so no surprise, your appearance is a reflection of what is happening internally which means an outer glow begins deep within your digestive system.

Your skin will look its best when you feed yourself the nutrients your belly needs, and ones that get properly digested. These nutrients are best derived from a diet that is rich in "whole" (as in minimally refined) food. The less processed, the better.

You can also help keep your skin healthy by eating foods that don't compromise your digestion. Foods such as sugar, gluten, alcohol, processed foods, refined carbohydrates, processed vegetable oils and processed meats and dairy.

Too much of this stuff can damage your intestinal tract and even contribute to a leaky gut (trust me, that's not something you want), allowing toxins and undigested food to seep directly into your bloodstream triggering an inflammatory response. The result is systemic inflammation, which spreads around the body causing a broad range of skin problems from dry skin to skin breakouts not to mention premature aging.

So let’s focus on some of the skin-nourishing nutrients you need to eat daily to promote good gut health – starting with probiotics. Probiotics can be found in everything from f
ermented beverages (ie kombucha and kefir) as well as lacto-fermented foods (such as raw sauerkraut, kimchi, miso, tempeh and yogurt.

Your digestive tract also requires a daily dose of prebiotics to feed the good bugs in your digestive tract. Prebiotics are foods which contain an insoluble fibre and include things like bananas, berries, onions, garlic, artichokes, asparagus, leeks, celery and leafy greens. Fibre also acts as an intestinal broom which helps sweep away toxic waste and cleanses your digestive tract.

Some of my favourite forms of fibre are c
hia seeds, fresh cut fruit, veggies and unrefined whole grains like steel cut oats.

A daily cup of bone broth from grass-fed beef bones or organic chicken bones is another good way to help balance gut health because it helps nourish and heal your intestinal lining. Plus it’s rich in skin-loving nutrients including amino acids, hyaluronic acid, chondroitin sulfate, calcium, magnesium and potassium.

Vitamin C is an easy addition to your diet because it's found in so many 'whole foods' and assists with the formation of collagen, which helps strengthen your skin and maintain elasticity. Fruits and veggies including lemons, berries, tomatoes, capsicums, oranges, kiwifruit, papaya and grapefruits are all high in vitamin C as are your leafy greens.

Starting your day with a glass of warm water and lemon juice will help flush toxins from your body and support your liver... and that's important because if your liver is working well, your skin will also thank you. A healthy gut and a healthy liver work synergistically to keep your skin clear and luminous.

Essential fatty acids are crucial to fully nourish and hydrate your skin. Coconut oil is rich in gut-healing lauric acid, medium chain triglycerides and it’s anti-microbial, anti-fungal and antiviral. Ghee and butter contain fat soluble vitamins A, E and K2 plus an anti-inflammatory substance called butyrate which can help protect the intestinal walls. They are also a good source of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which boosts metabolism and may have anti-cancer properties. Fish oils and ground flax seeds are also high in omega-3 fatty acids which reduce inflammation. And fermented cod liver oil is especially good because it is high in skin-loving vitamins A and D, plus it is rich in the essential fatty acids DHA and EPA.

Your body uses protein to build and repair your skin, muscle tissue and bones. It also promotes the growth of strong hair and nails. Plus protein helps regulate your metabolism and is crucial in the production of important body chemicals including enzymes and hormones. Try to get it from a variety of sources such as eggs, fish, lean meats, legumes, nuts, seeds and quality protein powder.

And I dare not forget the subject of spices! Cumin, cardamom, caraway seeds, nutmeg and cinnamon all help assist digestion and prevent gas. Ginger is anti-inflammatory and relieves nausea while peppermint soothes digestion by relaxing stomach muscles. Cayenne pepper stimulates your metabolism and helps curb cravings, turmeric is anti-inflammatory, cinnamon keeps blood sugar levels steady and cardamom relieves indigestion. Sage helps promote bile flow for healthy digestion, parsley is an iron-rich blood cleanser, thyme is an anti-inflammatory and fennel seeds help eliminate mucus and gas.

Not only are they rich in fibre but they also contain a plethora of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that fight free radical damage which causes premature skin aging.

  • Beetroots, blueberries and other purple coloured foods are rich in antioxidants called anthocyanins which help prevent wrinkles.
  • Papayas and other yellow fruits and vegetables are high in beta-carotene which converts to vitamin A which is crucial to skin repair. Papayas are also gut-friendly because they contain an enzyme called papain which assists digestion.
  • Cabbages and other cruciferous vegetables are high in fibre plus they contain a potent detoxifier, an antioxidant called sulforaphane as well as collagen-boosting vitamin C.
  • The super-hydrating, humble cucumber is anti-inflammatory and contains skin boosting silica as well as vitamins B and C, zinc, folic acid, iron, potassium, calcium and magnesium.
Finally, remember it’s not just what you eat but how you eat that determines the nourishment you get from your food. Avoid drinking with your meals as it dilutes your digestive enzymes, chew your food properly and sip your smoothies slowly or alternatively chew your smoothies to allow your saliva glands to begin the first stage of digestion and ensure maximum nutrient absorption.Want more information about the best beauty foods for skin? As The Number of Birthday Candles Increase..

You've probably noticed a few changes!

And if you're like me, having that extra glass of rosé doesn't make it so easy to roll out of bed anymore. Or that 5k you used to be able to run suddenly has your knees not-so-happy so you might have taken to walking (again, like me :)

With age comes insight into our capabilities and extra responsibility for making good choices. Being mindful about our physical body extends well beyond eating the occasional kale salad and drinking that extra glass of water, it very much involves taking good care of our skin.
While you're probably already good at using a zinc based moisturizer or bb cream to protect yourself from too much sun exposure, you might be a little confused about what products you can use to help your face and body look as healthy and beautiful as ever. It can be so frustrating trying to decide exactly what your skin needs, so I'm here to help sort this out!

What are serums for and do I really need one?

Generally speaking, serums are usually one of the most effective products you can use to counteract aging. The concentration of active ingredients in serums help to penetrate the skin faster and easier than creams because they’re more potent. As cell turnover starts to slow down, and as your antioxidant defenses decrease (like in your 30s) it's not a bad idea to be proactive and start using a serum.

It's even better to be proactive and start using one in your late 20's so that you're not fighting to turn back time when the aging process accelerates in your 40's and 50's (Trust me, I learned this the hard way as I was not always a green beauty maven :)

    graydon skincare superfood serum

And on that note, it so happens that we have a brand new SUPERFOOD SERUM which just launched. In fact, you're the first to know!

Bursting with age-busting superfood oils and extracts including saffron, goji berry, chia, barbary fig, turmeric and kale oil its surprisingly light texture will penetrate and supercharge your face, very actively nourishing your skin from the outside in. Adaptable to a broad range of skin types, there is not a complexion that will not benefit from a few drops of this every day.

Is there really such a thing as an anti-aging cream? And what's the difference between an eye cream and a face cream?

Not all creams are created equal. The word 'cream' is a catch-all term for all sorts of products - ranging from a dollar store jar of Nivea filled with pore clogging goo to a drug store moisturizer offering you a mix of hydration, nutrients and a cocktail of toxic ingredients you might not wish for.

A good anti-aging cream should deliver moisture to your face with key ingredients that improve the health and appearance of your skin. Unlike a serum where I'd recommend a less-is-more technique (because of its potency and price) a cream is more gentle and can be applied more generously. The biggest difference between an eye cream and a face cream isn’t really in the ingredients but like a serum, its potency. Because you need a little extra tlc under your lashes, you’ll want a higher concentration of active ingredients. It's also best if your eye cream has low to no scent as you don't want to chance irritating your eyes. As our creams contain a hefty dose of plant powered actives, they all fall into the anti-aging category and 2 of them are great under your eyes too!

Here's a guide to help you choose what's right for you...

If you have sensitive skin that tends to be oily, your best choice will be our Super Sensitive Skin Stuff.  It's super light and unscented and will glide over your face as if you have nothing on at all. Recently reformulated with Canadian grown maple sap it's filled with mineral-rich moisture. And it doubles as an eye cream too!

If you have normal / combination skin you might want to try our Green Cream. Infused with Canadian grown broccoli seed oil and a refreshing herbal blend of parsley sage, rosemary, and thyme this invigorating cream will energize and wake up your face.

If you have red irritated skin that needs some therapy, you might want to give our Putty a try. Filled with a bevy of skin soothing ingredients, our much-loved Putty with its characteristic golden hue will help appease skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea. Recently reformulated with turmeric and blue chamomile it has a wonderfully rich luxurious aroma and super silky feel.

If you have dry dull skin then our Berry Rich will be your new best friend. Blended with Canadian grown berry seed oils and a vegan probiotic culture to help support cellular renewal this delicious smelling cream will bring life into desert-like skin.

With 12.5% of non-nano zinc combined with a long list of nourishing sun reflective oils, our Elements is my moisturizer of choice as the weather gets warmer. I layer it over our Superfood Serum, and add a swoosh of our Face Glow for an extra boost of zinc-based tint and shimmer.Whether you use our products or a bunch of different brands, I hope this help you to navigate your way through the confusing task of finding just the right formula, no matter where you are in your anti-aging journey.

    And a very important PS!

I am so grateful and excited for those of you who used our promo code CAYENNE. I'm so happy to be able to support a whole bunch of dogs at Pawsitive. I am still missing our little dog Cayenne but it really does warm my heart to know that some goodness has come from her passing. Thank you all very much for your generous orders for which we took a combined total of 13% off to go towards this fundraising effort. I like the fact that even though this organization is Canadian, it largely supports dogs from high kill shelters in the US.
